LAID PAPER
This is a term for paper that is made via a specific process. It has a characteristic ribbed texture.
The Laid paper is made by putting the paper pulp in a mould with many fine wires to make a mesh. At right angles to these fine wires are thicker wires that hold up the fine wires. Because of these wires, the paper produced has a ribbed texture. (Often this is referred to as Linen). This method is used for high quality archival paper.
In the 19th century its use diminished. Laid paper is still used by artists and for documents of historical significance.
ACID & LIGNIN FREE PAPER (ARCHIVAL)
Lignin is found in the cell walls of plants. (Animal cells do not have cell walls, just cell membranes; plants have both.) Lignin-free paper does not go yellow. Acid-free paper does not become brittle.
Archival paper is an especially permanent, durable acid-free paper. Archival paper is meant to be used for publications of high legal, historical, or significant value. In the USA, such paper must also be approved in accordance with the ANSI standards.
JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINTING
Woodblock printing is a technique for printing text, images or patterns.
The woodblock is prepared as a relief matrix- the wood is carved away except for the part you want to print. For colour printing, multiple blocks are used, one for each colour.
Ukiyo-e is a genre of Japanese woodblock prints and painting produced between the 17th and 20th centuries. These prints feature motifs of landscapes, tales from history and the theatre.
When one considers the intricate designs and multiple colours of these prints, one really appreciates the extensive skills required to produce such beautiful art.
